Restorative Dentistry North Syracuse, NY
Dental problems occur, and when they do, we can help. When teeth are subjected to decay, breakage, or need to be removed, there are steps that we can take to restore the health of your tooth, and smile. At Mahar Dental, we understand how important healthy teeth are, not only to your oral health but your overall health as well. There are steps, along with tips and tools that we can provide to help you have a healthier smile.
Dental Bridge
A dental bridge can be used to replace missing teeth. We can bridge a false tooth between two healthy teeth or implant anchors. A dental bridge can be an excellent option when a patient is missing a single tooth. Missing teeth can cause havoc in the positioning of other teeth and force you to alter your regular diet. Unfortunately, a false tooth will not have the root system to make contact with the jaw bone, so bone atrophy will still occur. Read more about how a dental bridge can help if you have a missing tooth.
Dental Crown
Dental crowns can provide added strength to a weakened tooth. A full crown or a partial crown known as an inlay or onlay can help you keep your original tooth after it has been damaged. Dental crowns serve as a type of shield for the tooth, helping prevent further damage. When cared for properly, a dental crown should last many years. Discover how a dental crown can be used on a damaged or decayed tooth.
Dentures
Dentures are designed for patients who are missing teeth. Partial dentures and full dentures can be customized to fit upper and lower jaws. Today there are options including dental implants that can be used to permanently stabilize your denture in place. Discover how different types of removable dentures can replace missing teeth.
Tooth Fillings
Our teeth are under constant attack from bacteria. Doing your best to brush, floss and rinse bacteria away can greatly help, but you may still have decay occur. Decay occurs from the bacteria feeding on sugar; sugar can be found in food particles left in our mouth, and in plaque. Plaque is the soft gummy material that our body naturally makes, it is a blend of food debris and saliva. As the bacteria feed on sugar, it emits an acid that eats away at the enamel of our teeth. Enamel is the hard protective layer of our teeth, and once the bacteria extends into the hard layer, it can then infect the inner pulp of the tooth, leading to a painful problem. Catching decay early, while the damage is small, is ideal. During your semi-annual checkup, we will look for signs of decay. If small decay is found, we can fix it with a dental filling.
A dental filling is the most common dental restoration performed. We simply remove the damaged enamel and then fill the space with a filling material, either silver amalgam or white quartz composite. Learn more about tooth colored dental fillings.
Dental Implants
Implants are metal devices designed to replace missing teeth. The devices are usually made out of titanium and are surgically placed into the jawbone where the tooth is missing. Unlike a dental bridge, an implant is permanent. Learn more about the benefits of dental implants.
Root Canals
If decay extends through the enamel and into the pulp, there are only two courses of action to remove the infection, extraction or root canal therapy; the tooth will not heal itself if you just ignore it.
Root canal therapy is a dental procedure of going inside the tooth to clear away the infection, along with removing the pulp and nerve. We then cleanse the root with a medicated wash and fill it with a rubber material. The tooth is closed up with filling material and then protected with a dental crown to provide extra strength. Discover how a root canal could save a tooth from being extracted.
Tooth Extraction
Extracting, or removing, a tooth is a procedure that we never take lightly. If possible, it is best to retain your natural teeth, even if the restoration is complex. In general, dental extractions can fall into one of two categories, surgical or non-surgical. Surgical extraction means that cuts are made into your soft tissue to retrieve the tooth. Often the tooth is broken or quartered and removed in pieces. Non-surgical extractions are performed when the tooth can be lifted and pulled in one clean piece. Learn more about tooth extractions and when they are necessary.
TMJ Therapy
TMJ therapy is specific to your jaw joint. Your jaw can come out of alignment due to shifting teeth, an accident such as a fall or impact, or other muscular problems. The results can range from annoying to painful, some patients are shocked to realize their symptoms are related. Patients may experience popping, clicking, soreness or tiredness, or facial pain. Facial pain can be migraines, ear pain or eyebrow pain. We would need to diagnose the problem and customize treatment. Read more about TMJ and the treatments available to help with pain.
Scaling and Root Planing
A scaling and root planing is the most common periodontal procedure we perform. During a scaling and root planing, also known as “deep cleaning,” we remove plaque and tartar (calcified plaque) deposits from tooth surfaces both above and below the gums. Both of these substances are directly responsible for the development of periodontal disease. Learn more about scaling and root planing.
