Does Lip Piercing Cause as Much Oral Damage as Tongue Piercing?

Before you make a decision to do anything that is semi-permanent or permanent, you should get as much information as possible. Oral hygiene should be a top priority for many reasons.

An infection in your mouth can have a huge impact on your overall health. Even as a statement piece, having piercings can have their risks and so should be something to be concerned about. Here are some things to inquire about before you decide to get that piercing.

What Risks Are Involved with Lip Piercings and Tongue Piercings

Do yourself a favor and ask all the questions you can think of. Make sure you go to a shop that looks clean and has the proper licenses to be operating. Do not let anyone use a piercing gun.

They should be using a new sanitized needle for all piercings. It will have a sealed package before it's used. Your piercer should wash hands with antibacterial soap and then put on gloves. It is recommended that you be caught up on vaccinations before getting a piercing.

Either piercing has a lot of the same risks involved. Each location has potential for infection if not cleaned correctly. Every night you should remove the piercing and clean it just like you would your teeth. The idea is to stop bacteria from forming.

Keep in mind that aside from bacteria other things can happen. Your lip piercing can get in the way of chewing and damage the teeth closest to it. It can also make your gums recede, which can cause increased sensitivity to hot and cold and can lead to gingivitis and loss of teeth.

With both piercings, the jewelry can fall out and you can bite down on it, breaking a tooth or swallowing it. You can have an allergic reaction to the metal that is used that can lead to heart problems. It can take three to four weeks for it to heal up and so this is when you should be the most cautious.

Keep your mouth clean, try not to smoke if you're a smoker, avoid kissing, and follow the directions provided by a professional. Keep in mind going to the dentist with a piercing will make it difficult for them to do any kind of X-rays. To find out more, come in and see us.
