Is all of that necessary and what can a person do to help prevent it? More than 50 million Americans have reported a chronic problem with halitosis, so the problem is common.
Is Bad Breath Halitosis?
Halitosis is the dental term used to indicate bad breath. It means that odor causing bacteria is present in your mouth. This can be a chronic medical disorder, an indication of gum disease or the tell tale signs of needing a dental cleaning, or a temporary condition based on foods you've recently ingested. Bad breath can even be a sign that you need to drink more water.
Why do I have bad breath?
Medical Disorder: - Halitosis can be an indication of a larger issue. Patients who suffer from respiratory disorders with a constant post-nasal drip, or an infection in their lungs, windpipe or throat may contribute to halitosis. Other medical issues including gastrointestinal and even liver or kidney problems may also suffer from halitosis.
Medications we take: - Some medications can cause a foul odor in our mouths. If this is a constant problem for you, discuss it with your doctor, they may be able to change your medication or make adjustments.
Dental Disorder: - Halitosis can be an indication of infection in your mouth. Odor causing bacteria can be present in patients with gum disease and in tartar or calculus buildup. A dental appointment, including a dental cleaning, can greatly assist in removing the bacteria.
Daily Use: - Foods and drinks we consume can give us bad breath. Some foods and drinks are much more strong in acids and other odor causing bacterias that can leave a taste in our mouth.
